Otterbein

Otterbein refers to several entities, most notably Otterbein University and the Otterbein Church, also known as the United Brethren in Christ. Otterbein University is a private liberal arts college located in Westerville, Ohio. Founded in 1847, it is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The Otterbein Church, or United Brethren in Christ, was a Protestant denomination that originated in the United States in the early 19th century. It was founded by Christian Newcomer and others, with a strong emphasis on evangelical principles and social reform. In 1968, the United Brethren in Christ denomination merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to form the United Methodist Church. Remnants of the United Brethren tradition persist in various churches and institutions, including Otterbein University. The name "Otterbein" itself honors John William Otterbein, a prominent figure in the early Methodist movement and a key influence on the founders of the United Brethren Church.
