Otoscópica

Otoscópica refers to the examination of the ear canal and tympanic membrane using an otoscope. An otoscope is a medical instrument that illuminates and magnifies the interior of the ear. This procedure is a fundamental part of a physical examination, particularly in otolaryngology (ENT medicine) and general practice. The otoscope typically consists of a handle containing a light source and batteries, and a speculum, which is a cone-shaped attachment inserted into the ear canal. Different sizes of specula are available to accommodate various ear canal sizes.

During an otoscopic examination, the physician or healthcare provider gently inserts the speculum into the ear canal to visualize the ear canal's walls, looking for any abnormalities such as inflammation, wax buildup (cerumen impaction), foreign bodies, or signs of infection. The primary goal is to assess the health of the ear canal and, crucially, the tympanic membrane, commonly known as the eardrum. The appearance of the tympanic membrane, including its color, position, and transparency, provides valuable diagnostic information about the middle ear. For instance, a bulging or retracted eardrum can indicate middle ear effusion or pressure changes. Otoscopy is painless and non-invasive, making it a routine and essential diagnostic tool for a wide range of ear conditions.
