Otorgase

Otorgase is the reflexive imperfect-subjunctive form of the Spanish verb otorgar, used in subordinate clauses to express hypothetical or counterfactual situations involving granting. It corresponds to the two standard imperfect-subjunctive forms se otorgara and se otorgase. In practice, both variants are understood to convey the same mood, with regional and stylistic preferences guiding which form is chosen.

Examples of usage include sentences such as: “Si la empresa se otorgase más autonomía, podría competir mejor,” or “Si él se otorgase una prórroga, terminaría el informe.” The reflexive pronoun se indicates that the granting action is performed by the subject upon itself, though the construction can also be used in broader contexts where the grant is attributed to a subject within a hypothetical frame. Other persons follow the usual imperfect-subjunctive paradigms: yo me otorgara / me otorgase, tú te otorgaras / te otorgases, nosotros nos otorgáramos / nos otorgásemos, vosotros os otorgarais / os otorgaseis, ellos se otorgaran / se otorgasen.

In contemporary usage, otor g ase appears mainly in formal, literary, or historical texts and legal language. In everyday speech, speakers more often use non-reflexive forms or other verbs such as otorgar, conceder, or dar in past-tense constructions. The form remains a standard example of the Spanish imperfect subjunctive and of reflexive verb constructions.
