Otantivirheestä, often translated as sampling error, refers to the difference between a sample statistic and the true population parameter. When a sample is drawn from a larger population, it is unlikely that the sample will perfectly represent the entire population. This discrepancy, or variation, is inherent in the sampling process and is known as sampling error.

Sampling error can arise from various sources. One primary cause is random chance. Even with a perfectly random and representative sample, there will always be some degree of variability simply due to the luck of the draw. Another source can be non-random sampling methods, where certain individuals or groups in the population have a higher or lower chance of being selected, leading to a biased sample.

The magnitude of sampling error can be influenced by the sample size and the variability within the population. Generally, larger sample sizes tend to reduce sampling error, as they are more likely to capture the diversity of the population. Similarly, if the population is very homogeneous (all members are similar), sampling error will be smaller than in a heterogeneous population.

Statistical methods are employed to estimate and account for sampling error. Confidence intervals, for instance, provide a range within which the true population parameter is likely to lie, with a specified level of confidence. Understanding and quantifying sampling error is crucial for drawing valid conclusions from data collected through surveys or experiments. It helps researchers assess the reliability and generalizability of their findings to the broader population.
