In the context of computer networks, the most well-known addressing system is the Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses provide a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. There are two primary versions, IPv4 and IPv6, each with its own structure and capacity for addresses.

Beyond IP addresses, other addressing systems exist. For example, Media Access Control (MAC) addresses are hardware-based identifiers assigned to network interface controllers. These are typically used for communication within a local network segment. In the realm of telephony, telephone numbers serve as an addressing system to connect callers to specific individuals or devices. Even in physical contexts, postal addressing systems enable mail delivery to specific residences or businesses.
