Osing

The Osing are an ethnic group in Indonesia, primarily residing in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. They speak the Osing language, also known as Bahasa Osing, which is considered by many linguists to be a distinct dialect or language within the Javanese language continuum.

Language: Osing is often described as a separate variety within Javanese. It has unique phonology and vocabulary compared with other Javanese varieties, though many Osing are bilingual in Indonesian and use it in education and media.

History and culture: The Osing trace their roots to the Blambangan realm, a historical polity in eastern Java. Traditional arts include the Gandrung dance, performed during communal celebrations and harvest periods. Osing cultural practices reflect influences from Javanese and Balinese traditions as well as local customs. The majority religion among Osing remains Islam, with Hindu and Buddhist communities present in the broader region.

Economy and contemporary life: Agriculture has long been central, with crops such as rice, coffee, and cloves. Fishing remains important along coastal areas. In recent decades Banyuwangi has expanded its tourism sector, attracting visitors to natural attractions like Mount Ijen and the Bali Strait ferry route, which have created new jobs and services for the Osing people.
