Ortogonitás

Ortogonitás is a fundamental concept in mathematics, particularly in linear algebra and geometry, that describes a notion of perpendicularity. Two vectors are considered orthogonal if they are at a right angle to each other. This geometric intuition extends to higher dimensions and abstract vector spaces.

Mathematically, the orthogonality of two vectors, say u and v, is typically defined using the dot product (or inner product). If the dot product of u and v is zero, then u and v are orthogonal. The dot product of two vectors in Euclidean space is calculated by summing the products of their corresponding components. For example, if u = (u1, u2) and v = (v1, v2), their dot product is u1*v1 + u2*v2. If this sum equals zero, the vectors are orthogonal.

The concept of orthogonality is crucial in many areas. In geometry, it underpins the properties of perpendicular lines, planes, and shapes like rectangles and cubes. In linear algebra, orthogonal vectors form orthonormal bases, which simplify many calculations and are essential for transformations like rotations and projections. Signal processing and quantum mechanics also heavily rely on the notion of orthogonality for decomposing signals or states into independent components. A set of vectors is mutually orthogonal if every pair of distinct vectors in the set is orthogonal. An orthonormal set is a set of orthogonal vectors where each vector also has a magnitude (or norm) of 1.
