Ortogonallitást

Ortogonallitást, often translated as orthogonality, is a fundamental concept in mathematics, particularly in linear algebra and functional analysis. It describes a relationship between two objects, typically vectors or functions, that is analogous to the geometric notion of perpendicularity. Two vectors are orthogonal if the angle between them is 90 degrees, which in terms of their dot product means their dot product is zero.

In vector spaces, orthogonality is defined using an inner product. For two vectors u and v, they are orthogonal if their inner product, denoted as <u, v>, equals zero. This concept extends beyond Euclidean spaces to more abstract vector spaces, including spaces of functions. For instance, certain sets of orthogonal polynomials, like Legendre polynomials or Hermite polynomials, are crucial in solving differential equations and in approximation theory.

Orthogonality has wide-ranging applications. In signal processing, orthogonal bases (like Fourier series) are used to decompose complex signals into simpler components. In statistics, orthogonal transformations are employed to reduce dimensionality and decorrelate variables. In quantum mechanics, orthogonal wavefunctions represent distinct quantum states.
