Orrviken

Orrviken is a Småland village located in the district of Borgholm, County of Kalmar, Sweden. Situated on the east coast of the island of Öland, Orrviken lies approximately 1 kilometer east of the village of Kastellet, to which it is linked by a short road and a dirt footpath. The nearby Kanaal, a canal built by the Swedish engineer Fredrik Henrik af Chapman in the late 18th century, also passes through the village.

Orrviken was historically an important location during the Hanseatic League period. The harbor supplied salt produced from nearby gruit houses to the Hanseatic League's tradesmen in Stockholm, aiding the Swedish Realm's influence over Baltic maritime trade.

In modern times, Orrviken remains a small village, with the majority of its buildings serving residential purposes. A few seasonal occupants engage in traditional island activities such as fishing, farming, and tourism-assisted gathering of endemic plants, thus preserving their remote natural habitat's appearance.

The village features several historic structures, most notably one gruit house of 18th century construction now repurposed as a house, though a separate infill house is preserved. The village has managed to maintain a genuine pre-industrializing Småland culture, maintaining natural visible lanes through continuous woodland environments. Traces of early harbor operating systems have also been preserved through spot excavations around the canal area.
