Orjus

Orjus is a rare and ancient type of sailing vessel originating from Scandinavia. Little is known about its origins, but historians believe it emerged in the 12th century.

Characterized by its sleek, narrow design, the orjus was primarily used for trade and warfare. Its hull was typically made from pine or oak wood, and it featured two masts, a square sail, and a crew of several dozen sailors.

Trade and raiding expeditions were the primary functions of orjus vessels. They navigated the coastal waters of Scandinavia, engaging in commerce with other regional tribes and rivaling neighboring nations for resources and influence.

Excavations at several Scandinavian sites have uncovered remains that bear a resemblance to the orjus, such as in Reykjavik and the island of Sävar in Sweden.
