Organohydrogenation

Organohydrogenation is a chemical reaction that involves the addition of hydrogen across a carbon-carbon double or triple bond within an organic molecule. This process typically utilizes organometallic catalysts to facilitate the reaction. Unlike traditional hydrogenation, which often employs transition metals like platinum, palladium, or nickel, organohydrogenation specifically refers to catalytic systems that are based on organic compounds, often in conjunction with a metal center. These catalysts can offer distinct advantages, such as improved selectivity and milder reaction conditions, which are crucial for complex organic synthesis.

The mechanism of organohydrogenation generally involves the coordination of the unsaturated organic substrate to the organometallic catalyst, followed by the activation and transfer of hydrogen from a hydrogen donor molecule to the substrate.
