Opgaveafhængigheder, or task dependencies, are a fundamental concept in project management and workflow organization. They define the relationships between different tasks, specifying which tasks must be completed before others can begin. There are several common types of task dependencies. Finish-to-start (FS) is the most prevalent, where one task must finish before the next can start. Start-to-start (SS) means that two tasks can begin at the same time, or one task must start before another can start. Finish-to-finish (FF) occurs when two tasks must finish at the same time, or one task must finish before another can finish. Less common is start-to-finish (SF), where a task must start before another can finish.

Dependencies can be "hard" or "soft." Hard dependencies are inherent to the nature of the work, such as requiring a foundation to be poured before walls can be built. Soft dependencies are based on preferences or resource availability, like preferring to have a design completed before starting development, even if technically possible to do both concurrently.

Visualizing task dependencies is often done using Gantt charts or network diagrams, which clearly illustrate the sequence of activities. Identifying and mapping these dependencies helps in creating realistic project timelines, allocating resources effectively, and identifying potential bottlenecks or critical paths within a project. Ignoring or mismanaging dependencies can lead to delays, increased costs, and a breakdown in the project workflow.
