Opernstils

Opernstils is a German-derived term referring to the variety of stylistic approaches and conventions used in opera composition, performance and production. It encompasses musical language, vocal technique, dramatic structure, staging, and aesthetic priorities that distinguish one operatic tradition or period from another.

Historically, opernstils include early Baroque experiments with recitative and aria forms, Classical-era emphasis on balanced melodies and ensemble writing, Romantic focus on heightened emotion and orchestral color, and later movements such as verismo, which stressed naturalism and everyday subjects. Twentieth- and twenty-first-century operas incorporate modernist, neo-tonal, electronic and interdisciplinary practices, expanding the concept to include multimedia and site-specific work.
