OnlineArchiven

OnlineArchiven is a web-based digital archive platform designed to preserve and provide long-term access to web content, documents, and multimedia materials. Intended for researchers, cultural heritage institutions, and the public, it seeks to offer stable preservation alongside open discovery.

The project is run by a non-profit consortium of libraries, universities, and national archives. Content is collected through automated web crawls, deposits from partner institutions, and user submissions. Archived items include websites, scholarly papers, datasets, images, video, and audio.

Technical approach: OnlineArchiven uses open standards such as METS, PREMIS, and Dublin Core for metadata; supports OAI-PMH for interoperability; provides RESTful APIs for programmatic access. To ensure longevity, the archive implements fixity checks, redundancy across multiple data centers, and periodic format migration or emulation.

Access and governance: Core materials are intended for open access where copyright allows; access restrictions apply to copyrighted or sensitive items. A governance body composed of member institutions sets policy, with a rotating chair and a public board of advisors.

History and scope: Launched in the early 2010s with initial partners and funding from library associations, OnlineArchiven has expanded to international collaborations and increased its holdings to cover a wide range of digital formats. It is cited as a resource in discussions of digital preservation and sustainable access.
