Omanikut is a traditional performance art from the fictional archipelago of Naharai, characterized by a blend of narrative verse, shadow puppetry and ceremonial music. Performances are typically staged during agricultural harvests and communal celebrations, and are carried out by small ensembles that travel between villages.

Etymology and scope: The name Omanikut is believed to derive from the Naharai words oma, meaning story, and nikut, meaning light or flame, a reference to the storytelling that is said to illuminate collective memory. The term can refer both to the performative act and to the troupe itself.

Form and practice: A performance usually centers on a sung or spoken epic narrated by a lead storyteller, with a shadow puppeteer handling carved figures projected on a screen and a small music group providing accompaniment. Common elements include ritual opening, episodic scenes, choral refrains and a closing blessing. Props include puppets made from dyed leather or wood, a drum, a flute, and occasionally string instruments.

Origins and modern status: The exact origins are not documented, but Omanikut is traced to coastal communities in the archipelago, where storytelling, memory and ritual are intertwined.
