Oldalait

Oldalait is a Hungarian grammatical form derived from the noun oldal, meaning side or page. The suffix -ait marks the third-person plural possessive, yielding the sense “its sides” or, depending on context, “the sides of it.” In everyday Hungarian, oldalait is used when describing the external faces or lateral surfaces of an object rather than its interior or its pages. The term may appear in technical, architectural, or descriptive prose where a clear distinction between edges and surfaces is needed.

Because oldal has two principal senses, the exact meaning of oldalait depends on context: it can refer to the sides of a physical object (for example, “the sides of the box”) or, in a literary sense, to pages of a book when paired with a different production (the more typical plural for pages is oldalak). The form oldalait thus illustrates how Hungarian marks possession and plurality on a noun to refer to the sides of objects in context.

Examples: “A doboz oldalait le kell festeni” (The sides of the box must be painted). “Az épület oldalait megvilágították” (The sides of the building were illuminated).
