In general, the oxidation state of an atom is determined by a set of rules. For example, the oxidation state of an element in its elemental form is always zero. The oxidation state of a monatomic ion is equal to its charge. For compounds, oxygen usually has an oxidation state of -2, except in peroxides where it is -1. Hydrogen typically has an oxidation state of +1 when bonded to nonmetals and -1 when bonded to metals.

The sum of the oxidation states of all atoms in a neutral molecule is zero. In a polyatomic ion, the sum of the oxidation states equals the charge of the ion. For instance, in water (H2O), hydrogen has an oxidation state of +1 and oxygen has -2. The sum is 2*(+1) + (-2) = 0. In the sulfate ion (SO4^2-), oxygen is -2, and the overall charge is -2. Sulfur's oxidation state can be calculated as S + 4*(-2) = -2, which gives S = +6.

Understanding oxidation states is crucial for balancing redox reactions, predicting chemical reactivity, and naming chemical compounds according to IUPAC nomenclature. It helps in classifying substances as oxidizing or reducing agents.
