Oksüdatsioone

Oksüdatsioone, more commonly known as oxidation, refers to a chemical reaction that involves the loss of electrons by a molecule, atom, or ion. This process often results in an increase in the oxidation state of the species undergoing oxidation. Oxidation is typically accompanied by a complementary process called reduction, where electrons are gained. Together, oxidation and reduction reactions form a redox reaction.

One of the most familiar examples of oxidation is rusting, where iron reacts with oxygen in the presence of water to form iron oxides. In biological systems, oxidation plays a crucial role in metabolism. Cellular respiration, for instance, involves a series of oxidation reactions that break down glucose to release energy. Enzymes, such as oxidases, are often involved in catalyzing these reactions.

The term "oxidation" was originally coined to describe reactions with oxygen, as oxygen is a strong oxidizing agent. However, the definition has since broadened to include any reaction where a species loses electrons, regardless of whether oxygen is involved. For example, the reaction between sodium and chlorine to form sodium chloride (NaCl) is a redox reaction where sodium is oxidized and chlorine is reduced. Understanding oxidation is fundamental to many fields, including chemistry, biology, and environmental science, as it underpins numerous natural and industrial processes.
