Oksüdatsiooninstateist refers to the oxidation state of an atom within a compound. The oxidation state is a hypothetical charge that an atom would have if all its bonds to different atoms were purely ionic. It is a bookkeeping tool used to track electrons in redox reactions. In elemental form, the oxidation state of an atom is zero. For monatomic ions, the oxidation state is equal to the charge of the ion.

There are a set of rules to determine oxidation states. For example, oxygen usually has an oxidation state of -2, except in peroxides where it is -1, and when bonded to fluorine. Hydrogen typically has an oxidation state of +1 when bonded to nonmetals and -1 when bonded to metals. The sum of the oxidation states of all atoms in a neutral compound is zero, and in a polyatomic ion, it equals the charge of the ion.

Understanding oxidation states is crucial for predicting the outcome of chemical reactions, particularly redox (reduction-oxidation) reactions, where electrons are transferred between species. In a redox reaction, one species is oxidized (its oxidation state increases) and another is reduced (its oxidation state decreases). For instance, in the reaction of sodium with chlorine to form sodium chloride, sodium is oxidized from an oxidation state of 0 to +1, and chlorine is reduced from 0 to -1. This concept applies across various fields of chemistry, from inorganic to organic and biochemistry.
