Oisty

Oisty is a fictional hamlet that first appears in the early books of the Obsidian Isles fantasy series. The settlement is situated on a narrow strip of fertile land between the River Colb and a range of low hills known as the White Crags, placing it at a strategic crossroads for caravans traveling between the northern harbor town of Glintwater and the inland capital of Evermere. Oisty is home to roughly 350 inhabitants in the series’ timeline, consisting mainly of farmers, blacksmiths, and a small guild of woodcarvers who supply decorative staves and ceremonial carvings to neighboring towns.

The local economy in the narrative relies on the cultivation of hardy wheat and a native root vegetable called “stale‑root” which is prized for its resilience to the harsh northern climate. A well is a central feature of the village, noted for its clear, cool water that has been described by the series’ prose as “luminous through the stone.” The village green, where the ancient oak tree known as “Old Banshee” stands, plays a ceremonial role during the annual Harvest Festival, a festival that emphasizes communal feasting, music, and the closing of the winter season.

Oisty is also mentioned as a minor locale early in the plot where the protagonist’s mentor seeks refuge. The mentor’s hidden, ruined library, containing fragments of a forgotten dialect, becomes an important clue for deciphering ancient texts. In the wider context of the series, Oisty is portrayed as representative of the small, interconnected communities that make up the Obsidian Isles, each contributing to the cultural mosaic that supports the larger narrative.
