It also outlines exposure controls, personal protection recommendations, and regulatory information.

The information contained within safety data is essential for various stakeholders, including employers, employees, emergency responders, and consumers. Employers use it to develop workplace safety procedures, train employees on proper handling techniques, and select appropriate personal protective equipment. The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) has been developed to standardize the way chemical hazards are classified and communicated worldwide, including the format and content of safety data sheets. This standardization aims to improve the effectiveness of hazard communication and facilitate international trade. Maintaining and updating safety data is an ongoing process as new information about the risks of substances becomes available.
