Ohjausmerkkien, or control characters, are non-printable characters used to control various aspects of text processing, display, and transmission. They are part of the character encoding standards, such as ASCII and Unicode, and serve specific functions in data communication and text formatting.

Control characters are typically represented by codes that fall outside the range of standard printable characters. In ASCII, for example, control characters are defined by codes 0 through 31, as well as code 127. These characters do not represent visible symbols but instead instruct devices or software on how to handle the text.

Common control characters include the carriage return (CR), line feed (LF), and tab (TAB). The carriage return moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line, while the line feed advances the cursor to the next line. The tab character moves the cursor to the next predefined tab stop. Other control characters include those for device control, such as the bell (BEL) character, which produces an audible alert, and the escape (ESC) character, used to introduce escape sequences for special functions.

Control characters play a crucial role in text formatting, data transmission, and communication protocols. They help structure text, manage line breaks, and facilitate the exchange of information between different systems. Understanding and properly handling control characters are essential for accurate text processing and effective communication in various computing environments.
