Observoitavuuscriterioniin, meaning observability criterion, is a concept primarily used in the field of control theory. It refers to the conditions under which the internal state of a dynamical system can be determined by observing its output over time. In simpler terms, it’s about whether we can figure out what’s going on inside a system by just looking at what it’s doing on the outside.

For a linear, time-invariant system described by state-space equations, the observability criterion is typically met if a specific matrix, known as the observability matrix, has full rank. This matrix is constructed using the system's state transition matrix and the output matrix. If the observability matrix is invertible, the system is observable.

Observability is a crucial concept for several reasons. It is fundamental for designing state estimators, such as the Kalman filter, which are used to estimate the unmeasurable states of a system from noisy measurements. Furthermore, observability is a prerequisite for state feedback control design, where the control action is based on the system’s internal states. If a system is not observable, it means that certain parts of its internal dynamics cannot be influenced or understood through the available outputs, which can severely limit the effectiveness of control strategies. The concept extends beyond linear systems to nonlinear systems, though the mathematical tools for analysis become more complex.
