Obrenovi

Obrenovi is a variant transliteration of the South Slavic surname Obrenović (Обреновић) and may refer to people who bear that name as well as to the historical Obrenović family, a prominent Serbian noble and ruling house in the 19th century. The dynasty arose after the First Serbian Uprising and was led by Miloš Obrenović, who established a semi-independent Principality of Serbia and laid foundations for a modern Serbian state. In the following decades, members of the Obrenović family held the throne and shaped the country’s political and diplomatic course, often in opposition to the rival Karađorđević dynasty.

Notable members associated with the Obrenović line include Mihailo Obrenović, who ruled Serbia in the mid-19th century, and Aleksandar (Alexander) Obrenović, who reigned from 1889 until his assassination in 1903. The assassination, known as the May Coup, ended the Obrenović dynasty and paved the way for the Karađorđević dynasty to ascend the Serbian throne. The Obrenović rulers pursued modernization, centralization, and shifts in alliance—especially in relation to Russia and other European powers—within a context of constitutional development and regional competition.

The name also appears in toponymy. Obrenovac is a town and municipality in the Belgrade metropolitan area, named after the Obrenović family, and there are other places with related toponymic forms. In modern usage, Obrenovi may be encountered as a non-diacritical variant of Obrenović in historical texts, genealogies, or informal references.
