Oberliga
The Oberliga is a term used in the German football league system, which translates to "Upper League" in English. It is the third tier of the German football league system, below the Bundesliga (first tier) and the 2. Bundesliga (second tier). The term "Oberliga" was used for the top-level football leagues in East Germany during the existence of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1949 to 1991. After German reunification in 1990, the Oberliga system was replaced by the Regionalliga, which served as the third tier until 2008. In 2008, the Regionalliga was restructured, and the Oberliga was reintroduced as the third tier of the German football league system. The Oberliga is divided into several regional divisions, with the number of divisions varying depending on the number of teams and the regional distribution of teams. The Oberliga is a professional league, with teams competing for promotion to the 2. Bundesliga and for qualification to the DFB-Pokal, the German Cup. The Oberliga is governed by the German Football Association (DFB), and the league is organized and administered by the DFB's regional associations. The Oberliga is an important part of the German football league system, providing a pathway for teams to compete at higher levels and for young players to develop their skills and gain experience.
