Növényleveleket, meaning plant leaves in Hungarian, are the primary organs of photosynthesis in most plants. They are typically flat and green, designed to maximize the absorption of sunlight. The structure of a leaf consists of several key components. The epidermis forms the outer protective layer, often covered by a waxy cuticle to prevent water loss. Beneath the epidermis are the mesophyll cells, which are rich in chloroplasts, the sites of photosynthesis. These mesophyll cells are usually divided into palisade and spongy layers. The palisade layer, located closer to the upper surface, contains elongated cells packed with chloroplasts. The spongy layer, below the palisade layer, has irregularly shaped cells with air spaces between them, facilitating gas exchange.

Veins, or vascular bundles, run through the leaf, providing structural support and transporting water and nutrients from the roots to the leaf (xylem) and sugars produced during photosynthesis to other parts of the plant (phloem). Stomata, small pores usually found on the lower epidermis, regulate gas exchange, allowing carbon dioxide to enter and oxygen to exit, while also controlling water vapor release. The shape, size, and arrangement of leaves vary greatly among plant species, adapting them to different environmental conditions. For example, some desert plants have thick, succulent leaves to store water, while aquatic plants may have thin, broad leaves to maximize light absorption in water. Leaves also play a role in transpiration, the process of water movement through a plant and its evaporation from aerial parts, such as leaves, stems and flowers.
