Nätverksnivån

Nätverksnivån, often translated as the network layer, is the third layer of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model. Its primary responsibility is to handle the logical addressing and routing of data packets across different networks. This layer enables devices to communicate with each other even if they are on separate physical networks.

The key function of the network layer is to determine the best path for a data packet to travel from its source to its destination. This process is known as routing. Routers, which operate at this layer, examine the destination IP address of a packet and use routing tables to forward it along the most efficient route. Without the network layer, data would be confined to the local network segment it originated from.

Protocols like the Internet Protocol (IP) are fundamental to the network layer. IP is responsible for assigning unique logical addresses (IP addresses) to devices and for the actual packet forwarding. The network layer ensures that data can traverse complex interconnected networks, forming the basis of the internet. It provides a connectionless service, meaning that each packet is treated independently and there is no guarantee of delivery or order. Higher layers, like the transport layer, are responsible for providing reliable communication services on top of this foundation.
