Näköhavaintonakin refers to the visual perception of a newborn infant. While often thought to be underdeveloped, newborns do possess some visual capabilities. They are born with the ability to see, although their vision is blurry and limited in range. Newborns are best able to focus on objects that are about 8 to 12 inches away, which is roughly the distance to their mother's face during breastfeeding. They are attracted to high-contrast patterns, such as black and white shapes, and can also detect movement. Their pupils are also sensitive to light.
