Nährstoffeinträge refers to the introduction of nutrients into an ecosystem, particularly aquatic environments. These nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus, are essential for plant and algal growth. However, excessive inputs can lead to a process known as eutrophication.

Sources of nutrient inputs are both natural and anthropogenic. Natural sources include atmospheric deposition, weathering of rocks, and decomposition of organic matter. Human activities significantly contribute to increased nutrient loads. These include agricultural runoff carrying fertilizers, sewage discharge from wastewater treatment plants and septic systems, industrial emissions, and urban stormwater runoff.

When nutrient inputs exceed the capacity of an ecosystem to process them, they can disrupt the ecological balance. High concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus stimulate rapid growth of algae and aquatic plants, leading to algal blooms. These blooms can deplete dissolved oxygen in the water when they die and decompose, creating hypoxic or anoxic conditions that are harmful or lethal to fish and other aquatic organisms. Furthermore, some algal blooms can produce toxins that pose risks to human and animal health.

Managing nutrient inputs is crucial for maintaining water quality and the health of aquatic ecosystems. Strategies include improving wastewater treatment, implementing sustainable agricultural practices such as reduced fertilizer use and better manure management, controlling urban runoff through green infrastructure, and restoring natural buffer zones along waterways. International cooperation is also vital, as nutrients can travel long distances across borders.
