Nägemisväljadesse

Nägemisväljadesse refers to the field of vision or visual field. It is the entire area that can be perceived by the eye when it is fixed in one spot. This area is not uniform; it is largest for peripheral vision and smallest for central vision. The visual field is often described in terms of degrees, with the temporal (side) field being the widest, followed by the nasal (nose side), superior (up), and inferior (down) fields.

Visual field testing, also known as perimetry, is a method used to measure the extent and sensitivity of a person's visual field. This is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring a variety of conditions affecting the eyes and brain. Diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, optic nerve damage, and neurological disorders affecting the visual pathways can cause a reduction or loss of vision in specific parts of the visual field. These losses can manifest as blind spots (scotomas) or generalized constriction of the visual field.

A normal visual field allows individuals to see objects in their surroundings without moving their eyes. Any deviation from this normal range can impact daily activities, such as driving, reading, or navigating. Optometrists and ophthalmologists use specialized equipment to perform visual field tests, which can range from simple confrontation tests done at the bedside to sophisticated automated perimetry performed in a darkened room with a computer-controlled device. The results help in understanding the extent of visual impairment and guiding treatment strategies.
