Nyálkahártyasejtek, commonly referred to as mucosal cells in English, are specialized epithelial cells that line the mucous membranes of various organs in the body. These membranes form a protective barrier and are found in the respiratory tract, digestive system, urinary tract, and reproductive system. The primary function of mucosal cells is to produce and secrete mucus, a viscous fluid that lubricates surfaces, traps foreign particles like bacteria and viruses, and prevents dehydration of the underlying tissues.

The type and specific function of mucosal cells can vary depending on their location. For example, in the respiratory system, goblet cells are a type of mucosal cell responsible for mucus production, which helps to clear inhaled irritants. In the digestive tract, mucosal cells contribute to the protective mucus layer that shields the stomach and intestines from digestive acids and enzymes. These cells also play a role in nutrient absorption and immune defense by housing immune cells and secreting antimicrobial substances. The health and integrity of mucosal cells are crucial for maintaining the body's first line of defense against pathogens and environmental insults.
