Nyugat-Ázsia or Land of the Setting Sun is a transitional zone between the Asian continent and the Middle East. The region is characterized by a diverse landscape of beaches, islands, and mountain ranges that meet the south eastern part of the Turkish coast. Its inlets and bays stretch from the province of Adana to the city of Laçin.

This geographic location has historically led to communications and cultural exchange between numerous regions and civilizations. Arab empires, crusaders, Byzantines and other nearby Mediterranean trucking systems, dhelahoes and nomadic groups travel to and from this area, allowing direct trade with neighboring centers. Population density varies throughout the region; the seaside regions are decentralized, while some inland regions are highly populated and denuded.

In recent years, the region has been geographically separated from the main Turkish population. The most significant site in the port town of Iskenderun is associated with the city's historic fort. Several maps of the area date back to pre-Ottoman times. Current insights demonstrate that a string of walled towns appears to link this fort with that of modern-day Kayseri in terms of trading technologies.
