NyugatSzahara

NyugatSzahara is the Hungarian name for Western Sahara, a disputed territory on the northwest coast of Africa. It is bordered by Morocco to the north, Algeria to the northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The territory is largely desert.

The political status of Western Sahara is a complex and ongoing issue. Morocco claims sovereignty over the territory, referring to it as its Southern Provinces. This claim is contested by the Polisario Front, a Sahrawi liberation movement that seeks independence for Western Sahara and has declared the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). The SADR is recognized by a number of countries and is a full member of the African Union.

Historically, Western Sahara was a Spanish colony known as Spanish Sahara until 1975. Following Spain's withdrawal, Morocco and Mauritania occupied the territory. Mauritania later withdrew its claims. The United Nations considers Western Sahara a non-self-governing territory and has been involved in efforts to find a political solution, including a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people. However, disagreements over voter eligibility have prevented the referendum from taking place. The region remains divided, with Morocco controlling approximately 80% of the territory, including its major cities and natural resources, while the Polisario Front controls the remaining 20%, primarily desert areas east of the Moroccan Wall. The unresolved status continues to be a source of regional tension.
