Nutriëntenbelasting refers to the excessive input of nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus, into an aquatic ecosystem. This influx of nutrients can originate from various sources, including agricultural runoff, wastewater treatment plant discharges, and atmospheric deposition. When nutrient levels become too high, they can disrupt the natural balance of the ecosystem.

One of the most significant consequences of nutriëntenbelasting is eutrophication. This process is characterized by an overgrowth of algae and aquatic plants, often referred to as algal blooms. These blooms can deplete dissolved oxygen in the water, leading to hypoxic conditions that are harmful or fatal to fish and other aquatic organisms.
