Nuottikirjoitus, or musical notation, is a system used to represent music visually on a staff, allowing musicians to read and perform compositions accurately. Originating in medieval Europe, it has evolved into a standardized method for recording pitch, rhythm, and dynamics across various musical traditions.

The basic elements of nuottikirjoitus include the staff, which consists of five horizontal lines and four spaces that represent the musical pitch. Notes are placed on these lines and spaces to indicate specific pitches, while clefs (such as the treble and bass clefs) define the range of pitches on the staff. Time signatures, positioned at the beginning of a piece, indicate the rhythmic structure, showing how many beats are in each measure and which note value receives one beat.

Rhythm is conveyed through note values (whole, half, quarter, eighth, etc.) and rests, which denote periods of silence. Dynamics, marked by symbols like *piano* (soft) and *forte* (loud), guide the volume at which music should be played. Other notational elements include articulation marks (e.g., staccato, legato), tempo indications (e.g., *allegro*, *adagio*), and expression markings (e.g., *crescendo*, *diminuendo*).

Nuottikirjoitus serves as a universal language for musicians, enabling collaboration and interpretation across cultures and eras.
