Nucleophilic substitution reactions involve the replacement of a leaving group on an electrophilic atom by a nucleophile. The most well-known mechanisms for nucleophilic substitution are SN1 and SN2. SN2 reactions are concerted, meaning bond breaking and bond formation occur simultaneously, and are favored by strong nucleophiles and aprotic solvents. SN1 reactions proceed in two steps, with the formation of a carbocation intermediate, and are favored by weak nucleophiles and protic solvents. Nucleophilic addition reactions, on the other hand, typically occur at unsaturated centers, such as carbonyl groups, where the pi bond breaks to accommodate the incoming nucleophile.
