Nuca

Nuca is the term used in Spanish and Portuguese for the back of the neck—the posterior region where the head meets the upper back. In English, the corresponding term is the nape of the neck. The word appears in everyday speech as well as anatomy and medical contexts.

Anatomy and landmarks: The nuca lies in the occipital region at the base of the skull and the upper part of the cervical spine. Bony landmarks include the external occipital protuberance and the superior nuchal line of the occipital bone. Muscularly, it is supported by the trapezius (upper fibers), splenius capitis, and semispinalis capitis, with deeper suboccipital muscles located near the occiput. The ligamentum nuchae runs along the midline from the skull to the cervical vertebrae, helping to position and stabilize the head.

Function and clinical relevance: The nuca provides attachment for muscles that move and stabilize the head and neck, contributing to posture and neck flexibility. It is a common site of muscle tension and strain, particularly after poor posture or whiplash injuries.
