Nozizeptoren are sensory receptors that detect noxious stimuli, meaning they respond to potential or actual tissue damage. These specialized nerve endings are found throughout the body, including the skin, muscles, joints, and internal organs. When a harmful stimulus, such as extreme heat, cold, pressure, or a chemical irritant, is encountered, nozizeptoren are activated. This activation triggers a signal that travels along nerve fibers to the spinal cord and then to the brain. The brain then interprets this signal as pain.
