Nounotype

Nounotype is a proposed lexical semantic category in linguistic theory used to designate nouns that primarily denote a class or type rather than a collection of individual tokens. The term combines “noun” and “type” to emphasize the type-level reference that underlies generic and classificatory readings.

In semantics, nounotypes are contrasted with token-denoting nouns, which refer to particular occurrences or individuals. For example, in a generic sentence such as "Dogs are friendly," the noun dog can be interpreted in a type-denoting sense, illustrating a potential nounotype reading that generalizes over tokens.

Nounotypes typically appear with generic operators or quantifiers, and their denotation can support universal or distributive readings depending on the language and syntax. They may interact with mass/count distinctions in specialized ways, since types can be abstract and not necessarily countable at the token level.

Classification and analysis: Researchers use the concept to distinguish type-denoting nouns from ordinary count nouns in typological and semantic studies. Some theories treat nounotypes as a subclass of common nouns with robust type-denoting semantics, while others propose separate morphosyntactic features to mark type readings.

Limitations: Nounotype remains a theoretical construct with limited empirical validation; its usefulness lies in clarifying how languages encode generic and classificatory meaning.
