Nothapodytes

Nothapodytes is a genus of flowering plants in the family Icacinaceae. The genus is native to Southeast Asia and Australia. Species within this genus are typically small trees or shrubs.

The most well-known species, Nothapodytes nimmoniana, also known as the Indian yew or Malabar yew, is of significant interest due to its medicinal properties. This species contains compounds such as camptothecin and its derivatives, which have shown potent anti-cancer activity. Camptothecin was the first-in-class topoisomerase I inhibitor, and its semi-synthetic derivatives like topotecan and irinotecan are important chemotherapy drugs.

However, the extraction of these valuable compounds from wild populations of Nothapodytes nimmoniana has led to concerns about overharvesting and the conservation status of the species. Efforts are underway to develop sustainable harvesting methods and explore alternative sources or synthetic production of these important anti-cancer agents.
