Noryang

Noryang is a Korean toponym used for coastal areas in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. The most notable reference is to a waterway off the coast near Tongyeong in South Gyeongsang Province, between Namhae Island and the mainland. This coastal zone forms part of the maritime routes surrounding the Korea Strait and the broader southern sea region of the peninsula.

Historically, Noryang is best known as the site of the Battle of Noryang, fought on December 16, 1598, during the Imjin War. In this engagement, a combined Korean and Chinese allied fleet commanded by Admiral Yi Sun-sin defeated the Japanese fleet. Yi Sun-sin was killed during the battle, making it a pivotal and symbolic moment in Korean naval history. The battle contributed to the suppression of Japanese naval incursions and helped bring the war toward its end, even as it exacted a personal sacrifice from one of Korea’s most celebrated admirals.

In modern times, the Noryang area is associated with coastal communities, fishing activity, and regional maritime culture. It remains a site of historical memory, with monuments and memorials that commemorate Yi Sun-sin and the Battle of Noryang, contributing to local tourism and education about the Imjin War.
