Norræna

Norræna is a term used in the Nordic linguistic and cultural spheres to denote the Norse or North Germanic linguistic family and related cultural fields. In Icelandic and other Nordic languages, norræna can function as an umbrella label for Norse studies, encompassing language, literature, history, and philology associated with the Norse world.

Linguistically, the North Germanic language group comprises Icelandic, Faroese, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, all descended from Old Norse. Old Norse was the language of medieval Norse societies and the source for much of the surviving literature, including sagas, eddas, and poetry. Norræna as a scholarly term thus often covers both the historical language (Old Norse) and its modern descendants, with emphasis on linguistic study, textual criticism, glossaries, and dictionaries that aid understanding of medieval texts.
