Normalformate

Normalformate refers to a set of standardized paper sizes commonly used in Europe and other parts of the world. It is based on the ISO 216 standard, which defines the A, B, and C series of paper sizes. The most prevalent series is the A series, where A0 is the largest size and each subsequent size (A1, A2, etc.) is half the area of the previous one. This series is derived from a rectangle with an aspect ratio of 1:√2, meaning the ratio of the long side to the short side is the square root of two.

The B series is intended for posters, wall charts, and other applications where a larger format might be needed than the A series provides. The C series is primarily used for envelopes, with C4 being designed to hold an A4 sheet without folding, C5 for an A5 sheet, and so on. The dimensions of each paper size are precisely defined in millimeters. For example, A4 measures 210 x 297 mm, and A0 measures 841 x 1189 mm. The system's advantage lies in its consistent halving of area with each reduction in number, making it easy to scale documents and ensure they fit into standard envelopes or printing equipment.
