Norlignans

Norlignans are a class of organic compounds found in plants. They are characterized by a specific chemical structure that includes two phenylpropane units linked by an oxygen atom, with a methylene bridge also present. This core structure distinguishes them from other lignans. Norlignans are biosynthesized from tyrosine or phenylalanine, amino acids commonly found in plants.

These compounds are widely distributed in the plant kingdom, with notable occurrences in families such as the Lauraceae (laurel family), Magnoliaceae (magnolia family), and Annonaceae (custard apple family). Their presence can vary significantly between different plant species and even within different parts of the same plant.
