Norbertus

Norbertus, also known as Norbert of Xanten, was a German Benedictine monk and the founder of the Premonstratensian Order. Born around 1080 in the Duchy of Saxony, Norbertus was educated at the cathedral school of Xanten, where he became a priest. He later joined the Benedictine Order and was appointed as the abbot of the monastery of Prüm in 1115.

Norbertus is best known for his work in reforming the Benedictine Order, which had become lax and corrupt. He established the Premonstratensian Order in 1120, with the aim of restoring the discipline and spirituality of the early Church. The Premonstratensians were known for their strict observance of the Rule of St. Benedict and their emphasis on prayer and contemplation.

Norbertus also played a significant role in the political and religious affairs of his time. He was a close advisor to Emperor Henry V and was instrumental in the election of Pope Innocent II. He was also a strong advocate for the rights of the Church and the poor, and he founded several hospitals and almshouses to provide for the needy.

Norbertus died on May 6, 1134, and was canonized as a saint in 1195. He is the patron saint of brewers, bakers, and the Premonstratensian Order. His feast day is celebrated on May 6.
