Nonrewritability

Nonrewritability refers to the concept that certain information or data cannot be altered or erased once it has been recorded or established. This contrasts with rewritability, where data can be modified or deleted. The principle of nonrewritability is fundamental to the integrity and immutability of records, ensuring that they remain as they were originally created.

In various fields, nonrewritability serves distinct purposes. In digital storage, non-rewritable media like CD-Rs (Compact Disc-Recordable) allow users to write data once, but not erase or overwrite it, preserving the original content permanently. This is useful for archiving or distributing software where modifications are undesirable. In cryptography, nonrewritable digital signatures ensure that a message's authenticity cannot be challenged or changed after it has been signed. The inherent nonrewritability of the signature guarantees that the message content and sender remain verifiable.

The concept also extends to more abstract notions. Historical records, once documented, are generally considered nonrewritable; while interpretations may change, the original accounts are fixed. Similarly, certain legal or contractual agreements, once finalized, are designed to be immutable to prevent subsequent disputes or manipulations.
