Nonprecursor

Nonprecursor is a relative term used in chemistry, biochemistry, and related fields to describe a substance that does not serve as a precursor to a specified target compound, reaction, or pathway. The meaning depends on the chosen reference; a molecule that is a nonprecursor for one product may be a precursor for another.

In practice, precursors are substances that are transformed into another chemical entity during a synthetic step or metabolic sequence. Nonprecursors are those that do not undergo such transformation toward the target, either because they are not involved in the reaction, they act only as solvents or catalysts, or because they are byproducts or side components.
