Nonpetroleum

Nonpetroleum refers to substances, fuels, and materials that are not derived from crude petroleum. In energy and chemistry, the term encompasses a broad range of sources and products produced from non-oil feedstocks, including renewable energy such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power; electricity generated from nonpetroleum sources; hydrogen produced from non-oil methods; and biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel. It also covers polymers and chemicals obtained from biomass or other non-petroleum processes, such as bio-based plastics.

In practice, nonpetroleum resources are pursued to reduce oil dependence, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and diversify supply chains. Transportation uses electric vehicles powered by nonpetroleum electricity, biofuels for compatible engines, and hydrogen fuel cells. Industry uses biobased solvents, lubricants, and feedstocks for chemicals. Power generation relies on renewables and, in some cases, nuclear energy, providing nonpetroleum alternatives to fossil fuels.

Challenges include higher upfront costs, intermittency of some renewables, supply and logistics of biofeedstocks, and the need for new infrastructure and standards. Life-cycle assessments can vary depending on feedstock choices and production methods. Policy measures, market incentives, and technological advances influence the pace of the transition from petroleum-based products to nonpetroleum options.
