Nondiegetiske

Nondiegetiske refers to elements within a film or other narrative work that are not part of the story world itself. This contrasts with diegetic elements, which are part of the narrative's fictional universe and are perceived by the characters within that world.

A common example of nondiegetiske sound is music that plays during a scene but is not being heard by the characters. This score is intended for the audience to enhance the mood, convey emotion, or provide commentary. Similarly, nondiegetiske visual elements might include title cards, credits, or transitions that are clearly outside the diegetic reality.

The term originates from "diegesis," a Greek word that refers to the narration of a story. In film theory, diegetic sound is understood as anything originating from within the film's world, such as dialogue, a character turning on a radio, or a car horn honking. Nondiegetiske sound, conversely, is external to the characters' perception.

Understanding the distinction between diegetic and nondiegetiske elements is crucial for analyzing how filmmakers use sound and visuals to shape the audience's experience and interpret the narrative.
