Noncultivation

Noncultivation refers to the absence of deliberate cultivation of land or plants. It describes situations where land is kept in a natural or semi-natural state without regular plowing, sowing, or intensive management. The term can apply to agricultural fields, gardens, or broader landscapes, and it may be intentional—for ecological restoration, conservation, or traditional land-use practices—or the result of neglect or economic constraints.

In agriculture and horticulture, noncultivation includes leaving fields fallow for extended periods, allowing natural vegetation to regrow, or managing land with minimal disturbance. It is often discussed in relation to practices such as fallowing or naturalistic gardening, and it contrasts with conventional, input-intensive cultivation.

In ecological and landscape contexts, noncultivation supports biodiversity, soil structure, water retention, and carbon storage by reducing disturbance and allowing ecological succession to proceed.
